Been thinking of getting a Shen Hao PTB folding 6 x 17 camera, and was wondering if anyone had one and could perhaps give there thoughts on it?

I have a 6 x 17 back which goes on my 5 x 4, but thought sometimes it would be nice to just take the one camera out.

There is also the Shen Hao TFC 617-A non folding, but I thought the folding might be better.

Thanking you

Richard

Don't have a 617 camera, only the back like you. For me, the movements, especially swing, are really important. I wouldn't sacrifice them in buying a stand-alone 617 camera.

I think the cameras in questions are full 6x17 field cameras, not fixed bodies, so they do have swing etc.

Yes as I understand it they both have full movement on the front, rise, fall swing and shift, and on the back they have forward and back tilt, and swing, but no fall or shift, the TFC-A (non folding) as rise but the PTB (folding) does not have rise, and both have a bellows draw from 65 - 310mm.
They seem to be the same price, not sure if the TFC-A is not a bit better made (it looks it in the pictures) but as I have said does not fold.

I think I would either use a 5x4 and crop or buy the Canham 5x7 with their fantastic 6x17 roll film back..

5x7 film is getting harder to come by. But lovely otherwise. Paul Owen had one of their 617 backs.

Is black and white difficult to get in 5x7? The 4x5 reducing back is a common purchase with the camera I've been told .. cost and weight adds up though

That's it - you're basically limited to b&w. Which is quite some limitation. And if you like a particular emulsion, there's less choice than for 5x4.
