Jobo 2850

Post by Keith Tapscott » Wed Jul 04, 2007 6:43 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

When I bought my CPA2 processor (second-hand), it came with several processing drums for film and paper processing. One of these is a 2850 drum for processing photographic paper sizes as follows:

5x7 inches = 8 sheets
18x24 cm = 4 sheets
8x10 inches = 4 sheets
9.5x12 inches = 2 sheets
11x14 inches = 1 sheet
16x20 inches = 1 sheet

I have never used this tank and was wondering if it was suitable for processing equivalent sheet-film sizes. :?:

Hi Kieth, not 100% sure but I think it can be used for 12 sheets of 5x4 with a 2059n reel. I have been after a drum for that purpose and I am sure it will work. The 2059n reels take 6 sheets and I find process quite evenly, I use mine for E6.

The guy to talk too would be Second hand darkroom supplies as he sells used Jobos and is quite knowlegeable, I got my Duolab from him and he is very helpful.

There`s mention of the same tank for sale on that site, but it looks different from mine compared with the photo. On mine, the tank can be detached on the main body/tube at around the middle, sort of like an extension module. It`s probably around a couple of feet tall or more when stood upright.
There`s no reels with this, but there`s winged-clips that hold the paper sheets in place to keep them seperate from one another. I also have the instructions somewhere. (If I can find them.)

Hi Kieth, it is probably another 2xxx series drum with an extension then, I have some MF drums with the same arrangement.
You may find that without the extension it may be good for 1 or 2 reels.
I had some of the clips for paper too, not sure where they are as I never had a use for em. The reels are purchased seperately AFAIR.

Cheers

The lower half of the drum which has the 2850 label on, is identical to my 2563 Multitank 6 drum, so the other part should work with additional 2509n 4x5 sheet reels. Looks like I have a spare tank and an extension module.
Thanks for corresponding.
Cheers,
Keith.

Film sheet reels are only available for 4x5 inch and 9x12cm sizes. For larger size film sheets, e.g., 5x7, 8x10 etc, only the winged clips would be needed with this tank/drum. The label mentions 200ml which is probably the absolute minimum required. Considering the size, I would probably opt for around 1 litre of each processing solution for B&W negative film.

I've been using a 2830 and a 2840 drum for sheet film developing.

I do the 4x5" slides the "proper" way with spirals and all, and 5x7" slides in the 2830. If you have the winged spacers they're great, but maybe not strictly necessary. I have them, so I use them :)
I've done 5x7", 13x18cm, 18x24cm, 8x10", 24x30cm and 30x40cm films in these drums with no problems at all (except those ascribed to stupidity - like forgetting to put the developer in, putting two sheets in the same half of the drum, putting the emulsion on the side facing the drum wall and so on).

Since the chemicals I use tend to be supposed to be mixed at ratios like ++3, 1+31 and so on, I use 160ml of working solution. That's plenty to do 4 5x7" slides in JOBO 3-bath E-6, or two 8x10" negatives in Ilfotec-HC.

Thanks Ole, that means that even some of the ULF formats can be done in the 2850. :D
