compur and copal

Post by Emmanuel Bigler » Wed Sep 19, 2007 6:41 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Keith
According to the Schneider archive (see an_su_1963.pdf an_su_1967.pdf an_su_1970.pdf an_su_1995.pdf) the 90 6.8 (not-super-)angulon has a compur size 0.
The 90 F/8 super angulon has a compur size 0.
So the copal 0 should be a direct replacement, same threads, same diameters and same sacing between lens groups.
The 6.8 65 angulon and the 65 f/8 super angulon have a size-00, this small compur does not have (to the best of my knowledge) any sucessor in the copal line.
As far as I know the only modern size-00 shutter is the Chinese model that used to equip the Seagull 6x6 TLR.

Plain Angulon 90/6.8 is in a #0 - Prontor, Compur and Copal are the same. There were some that were made a smidgeon thinner for the 90/6.8 Angulon, but I believe any Angulon after about 1950 is in a "standard" shutter.

The oldest 90/8 Super Angulons came in Compur #00, later ones in #0.

Keith,

Ffordes currently have a 90/8 SA with recessed technika board for 249 right now.

There's also a couple of 90/6.8 Grandagons for around 500 and a Nikkor 90/4.5 SW for 699 :o

Keith, I have an f6.8 90mm Grandagon and an f8 Super Angulon, both are superb lenses although I prefer the Grandagon which is now on my 6x17 camera, but then I've been using the lense for about 20 years.

You will notice a huge increase in useability and quality with either over an f6.8 Angulon. While the Angulons are small & light their edge coverage is poor so they are tricky to use with movements and need stopping down.

I bought the f8 Super Angulon in May this year for 5x4 use and it's in excellent condition, I paid about £160 for it.

I checked the Ffordes site, but no 90mm f/8 SA, so it must have been sold.
The wider f/stop lenses such as f/6.8 etc are unlikely to fit my coned lensboard. (see the post`s by Aynsley Cooper.)

Thanks,

You have obviously found a bargain Ian, I wish I could be as lucky although I am still searching. :)
Perhaps I might even find one of the later multi-coated versions.

The secret is to keep looking and be patient.

They do come up on ebay, but the best time to buy is when quite a few are listed at the same time. Look across the EU to as postage is reasonable. I bought an as new f8 75mm SA from Italy for about £130 3 months ago, it was still packed in its box, last multicoated model. Theres far less demand for 5x4 lenses in other European countries so the sell for much less.

You might want to look at MXV as they had a couple f8,SA90's for around £250.

I made a phone call yesterday to `Mr Cad` in Croydon, Surrey and was told that they had one in stock which had just arrived in mint condition for £299. I bought this and it arrived this morning and seems to be free of any blemishes and is multi-coated too.
This lens has the same filter thread as my 180mm Symmar-S which is convenient, so whatever I decide to do in future with the 5x4 format, whether I keep the MPP or upgrade to a monorail or field Camera, I will have two good quality lenses to use.
Perhaps if I attended a workshop in future, I will get to see what other 5x4 users have and decide if I want to change to another system from there.
