Which Wide Angle Lens?

The wide-angle lens that came with my MPP is a Schneider 90mm f/6.8 Angulon (Not a Super Angulon). Which other similar focal length lens will fit the cone shaped lens board that the Angulon is attached to?
I am looking for something with a better coverage of the film area and which is also much sharper.

I bought a Schneider Super Angulon 90mm F8 for a reasonable price from Ebay - it is very sharp and has coverage that allows for some movements. It is mounted in a conical lens board on my MPP mk8.
Let me know if you want to sell the 90mm f6.8 - I fancy one for handheld stuff on the MPP as it is lighter and smaller than the Super,

Hello Matt, does the Super Angulon fit easily on the coned lens-mount in which my Angulon is attached?
Sorry but I will be keeping the Angulon, as I am now considering a commissioned sale of my entire MPP outfit and buying something a bit more modern. `Only considering though`.

Ligtweight & compact wide-angle LF lenses

I am very satisfied with the "small" 6.8 Rodenstock Grandagon-N Wide Angle (WA) lenses. I have both the the 75 and the 90.
The 75 is discontinued but the 90 is still on catalog. Both are easy to find as a second-hand item.
Even if they have "only" 6 elements inside, those lenses are extremely sharp. Even if the recommended aperture is f/22, you can use them at f/16 if you do not ask for maximum coverage. Even at f/11 for a hand-held press camera with little or no movements I'm sure that they will perform very nicely.
They are really compact and the 6.8-90 grandagon-N, if I remember well, is not bigger than the classical (and long discontinued) Schneider super-angulon F/8.
The direct competitor in focal length 90 is the recent, redesigned, 6.8 "classical" Schneider super-angulon.
I know that some f/8 WA lenses in 90 mm exists in the FUji & Nikon catalogue as well...
The real question is : will those modern 6.8 / 75 or 90 mm lenses fit your camera ?
Difficult to say, the mechanical data are available either on the Schneider web site
http://www.schneider-kreuznach.com/foto/foto.htm
http://www.schneider-kreuznach.com/foto ... lassic.htm
and Schneider pdf archives

for Rodenstock lenses see the Linos Rodenstock web site or for the discontinued lenses like the 75mm grandagon-N 6.8 on Paul Butzi's web site.

From a historical point of view it is interesting to note that the 6.8 Angulon lens is one of the last representatives of pre-World-War-II WA lenses, with the exception of some WA Congo lenses, still on catalog.
After WW-II, nameley after the 1946 US patent by M.M Roosinov and the developments of the Wild-Aviogon and Zeiss-Biogon by Ludwig Bertele, modern LF WA lenses like the super-angulons and grandagons exhibit very large negative meniscus-shaped front and rrear elements. The new designs perform really better than the old angulon-like designs, but are much bigger & heavier. And demand large size filters. Another advantage of the 6.8 moderns design over the f/5.6 or f/4.5 is that they use smaller size filters.
In order to reduce size & weight the last developments by Schneider use aspherical lens elements (e.g; super Symmar XL 80mm). This is another story, not in the same price range...

The 90mm f8 Super Angulon fits easily on the coned MPP panel, but doesn't work correctly with the rangefinder cam I have for a 90mm - which I think is designed for a straight Angulon.

I have a 90mm Optar (né Rodenstock) that is reputed to be better than the Angulon (covers a tad more too). tiniest piece of a lens as well !
But my personal favourite is the 100mm Wide Field Ektar, it sits just enough on the rail to allow raise/shift on my crown graphic without having to drop the bed, and it's very, very sharp!
But then again, I'm not fond of the 'mega wide' look of <90mm...

To Matt, Emmanuel and Buze, thanks for replying.
I will look out for a secondhand 90mm f/8 Super-Angulon lens which should provide very good coverage.
Does this lens require a neutral density centre-spot filter to provide even exposure?
Keith.

Hi Keith
I've used mine without a centre grad filter with no problems - there's a picture taken with it in the most recent project section on this forum

This was shot with a 90/8 SA. On 7x5".
I don't see the great need for a center filter even on this size, and the fall-off is much less on 5x4"!

I agree. The SA90/8 does not need a centre filter. At least not on anything I have shot so far.
I picked one up in pristine condition from ffordes last year for GBP250, incl a recessed linhof lensboard. They are comparatively inexpensive. Great value for money!

I looked on Ffordes site and didn`t see any 90mm Super Angulons. I also checked Mr Cad`s who have 65mm f/8, 75mm f/8 and 121mm f/8 Super Angulons, but not a 90mm. I will keep a look out for one.
Thanks to all who have replied to this thread.

You can add Christoph Greiner to your look-up table
Today he has a 90/6.8 Rodenstock grandagon but no Schneider in 90.

Hi Matt,
Which shutter does your 90mm f/8 S.A. have? My 90mm Angulon has a Synchro-Compur, but I`m not sure what the equivalent Copal shutter is.
Thanks,
Keith.
