Focusing Loupes
Does anybody know where I can buy a Horseman 7x focusing loupe? I have looked in the usual places on the interweb but no luck.
Have found B&H do the Wista 5x Loupe. Does anybody use this loupe and what do you think of it?
TIA.

Silvestri make some nice loupes that focus. I've used a 4x for a few years but they also do other strengths and a tilting option. I got mine after looking at the Rodenstock 4x which was expensive, plasticky and wouldn't hold focus. The Silvestri can be locked in position once you are happy with it and it's solidly built. The neck cord is on a rotating ring so doesn't get snarled up.

I got mine for £19 secondhand from mxv I mostly use the sinar binocular viewer but wanted something for critical focusing.
I found that on photonet while googling trying to find something about the X7 loupe and would say thats a reasonable description of it's use grain on the groundglass is visible but it's easier to tell if something is sharp.
while searching for something unrelated today in Adorama's site I noticed they have one for sale at $199

I have a Horseman 7x loupe. I like something that will magnify the image to the final size I would be printing most often. So using 4x5, the 7x loupe is allowing me to see the level of sharpness I will get for a 28x35 inch print. Sure you can see more grain from the groundglass, but I can better see what is sharp or not. I feel more comfortable with it, although the type of groundglass you have likely plays a big affect. Using a Horseman 45FA with std groundglass I am satisfied.

I used to use a Horseman 7x but switched to a Schneider 3x and my photos are actually sharper as a result.
The problem with the 7x is that the magnification is overkill for checking focus on the GG and, on my Ebony, I found that the lines of my fresnel were appearing sharper than the image. The other problem is the tiny coverage since it's very easy to misjudge overall focus based on too small a sample size. After switching to the Schneider lupe, I can now see a greater area of my image in one go and I find that 3x is perfectly adequate for checking my initial unaided focussing - end result: sharper photos!
