Embossing stamp

Post by Paul Mitchell » Thu Dec 04, 2008 2:11 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

I've just recently picked up (cheap!) an old company seal stamp with a view to creating my own stamp for my limited edition prints. Does any else here use one and know of anywhere that I can have a new die made?

Paul

Google is your friend - you can get the whole seal package (pliers and custom die) for under £20

Hi Tim

I have searched google but they all come as a complete package, press & die together, I just need the die. Also the plier type stamp can only emboss up to about 120gsm, my prints are about 280gsm. Cheers Paul

I use one of the small hand punches to emboss my books. They are easy to use and the results are impressive.

If you scan your prints in and use photoshop you can of course add an embossing layer. There was recent discussion about this in the RPS's periodical earlier this year. You might want to contact the RPS directly about this.

Ta for your posting thingy, as mentioned in my earlier post the hand punch can only cope with paper up to about 120gsm, you need far more pressure with 300gsm photorag paper.

It probably is more convenient to do a virtual emboss in photoshop but not as good as the real thing.

Paul,
I've just joined and found something I can immediately contribute to. You could try Bolsons. Here's a link to their catalogue. http://www.bolsons.co.uk/Complete%20Brochure.pdf
I have one of their presses and they made my own design of logo stamp for me for use in the press I also bought from them. They were very helpful n guiding what was ok for a design to emboss. I emboss all of my prints just off the bottom right of the image area. Why - because I like the look of it! But the whole thing was NOT cheap. You'll have to ask if they just do the die.
