Hilbre Island

Post by Tim Myers » Tue Aug 01, 2006 12:58 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Hilbre island is a small tidal island in the Dee Estuary. You can only cross the sands to the island when the tides permit - but in the summer if you pick the days when the tides are right you can get over there for an evening's photography and capture sunset there.

It takes about an hour to walk over to Hilbre, but the opportunities over there are superb. See here for more details of how to get there.

The point from which one walks out to the islands is only 15 minutes away from my house, so I visit fairly frequently during the summer. Marc Schmidt recently acompanied me over to the islands for an evening.

Here are a couple of pics I've taken on some recent visits over there.

If you're ever going over to Hilbre - let me know and I'll tag along!

Hi Tom,

I'm still using Velvia 50. I have a freezer full of it :)

The weather here has been absolutely awful too, you didn't miss much when you were away!

I'm on holiday for the next few weeks now, but am aiming to get over to Hilbre at the start of September.

Edit...
The weekend of the 6th September looks good tide wise - can't say anything for the weather yet ;)

Tim.

Well, Sunday looks good for a Hilbre trip, tides are good, and the weather is actually looking to be quite good!

Anyone interested? It would probably walk out at about 5:30pm - Sunset is 19:43.

Hello Tim , I got to the car park at 17.30 no sign of you. No response from the telephone number you left me , to contact you.
Not best pleased, wasted time, effort, expense. Hope you managed to get a good shot.

Hi Jc,

Firstly, many sincere apologies.

For some reason my 'phone is not ringing at the moment - I only discovered this yesterday evening when I got home and my wife informed me that she'd been trying to get hold of me. I assume that some of my 18 missed calls yesterday were from you.

I left the carpark to walk over at about twenty-to-six, and had looked round the carpark previously for anyone with the telltale signs of being a photographer, but didn't see anyone obvious.

I was parked to the south side of the Pay and Display meter at the centre of the car park.

Again, my sincere apologies that I missed you, and I hope that come the spring next year you'll come over for a visit to Hilbre.
