I have seen a very nice portrait done with this paper - an ilford rep showed it to me. He said really you MUST pre flash the paper to get the best out of it - unflashed it is quite contrasty.

Thanks deadpan
When I bought this paper I thought it would be a bit easier to deal with but I guess I was wrong...
A darkroom would certainly help... I don't even own a proper set of trays !

you can pre flash the paper in camera, if you hold a piece of paper in front of the lens or one of those diffuser filter type things over the lens and give it a bit of exposure then that will do the trick. it will be a trial and error situation but you will get much less contrast.

cheers
