For critique please?

Here's a portrait taken in Parati, Brazil, about ten years ago. It was close to noon and close to the equator, but clouds in the sky suggest it wasn't beating down, beating down. The film is Ilford FP4+, exposed as labelled.

My feeling is that I've nailed the exposure (and I can't do much about the development - in a hotel room, hot and sticky) but that there's still a sideways shift. The chap didn't know I was photographing him from inside a cafe opposite, so I couldn't get closer to the middle door which would have compensated for the limited extent of the sideways shift.

Mainly I do city- or landscapes, not covert portraiture...

Thoughts?

Nice. My only comment is that I would have used the Zone system to pull more detail out of the interior through the doors. But that's just my way of taking pictures 8)

I would have stepped back a bit to make sure I have room for potential minor cropping...

Unfortunately I couldn't step back; it was a candid shot (hey, call me paparazzi!) from a restaurant the other side of the street!

I like it!! I have to disagree with Jo (sorry!!) regarding the detail in the doorway. In my opinion I think any more visible detail might detract from the figure??

Thanks,

I agree - too much light in the back would have hidden the shopkeeper. It could perhaps have been raised a little, but there's plenty going on in there, I think: here's a section at about 1/3 real size.

Hi Neill

I like it - Joanna has a point regarding exposure etc etc but you're either a Zone System person or not.......................

Looking at Neil's comments, it's not so much whether you use the zone system or not, it's more about how you want the picture to look 8)
