FS New Copal 0 shutter

Post by richard littlewood » Fri Jan 08, 2010 2:25 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

New and unused Copal no 0 shutter, boxed, complete with instruction leaflet. I bought it to replace a slightly older shutter that I thought had fired it's last, but as it turned out it was a simple fix, so I'm selling this new one. £185 less vat at Robert Whites. I'm hoping for £100 all in.

Yes I did and a lovely little lens it is - small, light and tack sharp. A keeper for sure! But the shutter is a bit of a fiddle with the shutter speeds hard to see on the top of the lens, and the slower speeds are sticking badly. I was going to have the shutter CLA'd but with the difficult location of shutter dial I thought I would give her this new shutter instead. The next question is where to find an appropriate aperture scale since I don't think the old scale will fit the new shutter. It's the first time I have considered the fact that different lenses use different aperture scales although it makes perfect sense....

Anyone know where I can check the aperture scale for a 125mm Fujinon NW? Is it the same as say a 120mm Schneider APO symmar?

The second shutter is sticky? I had that shutter CLA'd about six months before I sent it to you. I'm sorry, Jenny.

You were extremely decent changing the shutter, and I appreciated it. I didn't realise you had had it CLA'd. It's just too bad it's not feeling well. But I've taken some shots I'm really pleased with using a manual exposure. It's great glass and I hope to keep it for a long time. So I may as well sort out a long term solution for the shutter....

I'd like to say something here... you UK folks are so very kind and decent to deal with overall. I wish more of us in the USA had your sense of decency, honor, and courtesy. Thank you, Jenny, for being the person you are. My roots are primarily Irish and Scottish with a bit of Brit. I often long to move to either Ireland or Scotland. I hear the old pubs are bad-ass. :D

Hi

What dose CLA stand for ?

And where would one get it done ? in England

How accurate should I expect a shutter to be

Thanks

Robin

I don't know much about this but I am learning as I go along.

My understanding is that CLA stands for 'clean, lubricate and adjust' and shutters that are inaccurate, sticky or damaged can be made fully functional after a CLA by someone who knows what they are doing. It's probably more of an issue if the lenses you use are in older shutters. Gari recommended a company called 'Black on White' in Bristol but I have never used them. The S.K.Grimes website (USA) is very helpful in explaining more about it. http://www.skgrimes.com/repair/repshut/index.htm

How accurate you want your shutter speeds to be depends on how critical your exposure is. Some people say within 1/10th or 1/20th of the correct shutter speed. I use mainly colour transparency film with 4-5 stops of latitude, so it is important to me for my exposures to be pretty accurate. If you shoot mainly black and white, it is probably less critical. Having said that I have never formally tested a shutter myself, but I'm pretty sure it can be done at home with the correct piece of equipment.

There are many more experienced people on the forum who could add much more.

Cheers,

Jenny

We'd be pleased to have you come over Mike, but you might want to hang fire in Texas for a while after you check out the link.

Nope... we Texans are all BS... we step in it constantly, afterall. However, that doesn't mean we're not sincere. In fact, we stink from sincerity.

I'm not afraid of the cold, Peter. Better that than the 105 degree F heat we had all summer here.
