I don't know if this is any good to you, but I use a piece of antireflective glass from my local picture framers held an appropriate distance off the scanner bed as a faux-betterscanning holder. It works really well, no newtons rings, and costs a couple of quid.

sounds like a plan! Do you guage the distance through trial and error? How do you elevate the glass?

Yeah you just use trial and error. I used peices of thin card stacked up. There's a large degree of tolerance though, so you don't need to worry about being ultra precise. Luckily the final distance ended up being about the thickness of a 1 pence piece, so i use one at each corner of a piece of 8x10 glass.
