Ideally with this older lens I'm looking for one recently used and verified as fully working, no focus issue on one side, etc so from a forum member would be better.

Looking at Schneider's vintage lens data it looks like the 90mm Angulon has an image circle of 154mm at f16. I don't think that this will cover 5x4 inches. Schneider suggest that this lens is for 9x12cm.

Thanks Adrian but it is for a 4x4 crop of 54 so should be fine as a small light lens option.

154mm is pretty much exactly the coverage needed for 4x5 anyway.

I've got one that you could borrow if you like. Might save the forum bandwidth without all the buying and selling ...

Marc, try to get a late version with a SN in the 6 million region. Some earlier lenses were/are quite poor at the edges/corners, there were variations in the cell spacing caused by the Compur shutters, by the 6 millions Schneider had solved the problems and had far better quality control.

They often sell for about £80-£90, although one UK ebay seller seems to think they are worth £236

Schneider list the early 90mm Super Angulons as covering 9x12 same as the Angulon, 5x4 was not a German format so the size was not used in their literature until long after Angulons had been discontinued.

As Patrick and others have said they do cover 5x4 as long as you take care and stopped down are almost as good as Grandagons & Super Angulons.

I had one with a SN of 11 xxx xxx (1970, must have been pretty late) - it was sharp but still not critically sharp in the far corners straight on at infinity and f/22-32. Shame really. But other than that they're great, considering they cost little more than the shutter itself.

Over the years I've used 3 90mm Angulons, I sold my first within 6 months of buying it and bought a Grandagon from Robert White instead. That first one was awful, and I did borrow another that was only a little better. However I bought another (20 years later) when I moved to Turkey and it's a good sharp lens at f22, I use mine for hand-held work.

Yours must be in a late Compur shutter Dave, they usually sell for slightly more.

About a year ago MW Classic had 5 or 6 for sale at the same time, all around the £90 mark, some on their website and a couple on ebay, Peter Walnes also occasionally has them at about the same price.
