Hi folks

It's that time of year when I have some time to dream about upcoming large format photo projects!

Anyway, thought I'd do a quick trawl to see if anyone has lenses to sell that happily cover 5x7 with movements.

I have a few lenses already, but looking for lenses in the region of:

115/120/121mm
150mm (with movements, as opposed to my present lens which barely covers)
180mm
240/270mm

I'm looking for relatively small/lightweight (I would say 700g as the max weight, but smaller the better) mounted in shutter to use on my Canham MQC57. And cheap. With the emphasis on the cheap...!

I'm also very interested in vintage lenses, again in shutter.

well, we're all after cheap lenses, aren't we....................................

the truth is, is that unless they're pretty knackered, then they're not cheap at all

...................and even at the Camera Fairs, there's scant about unless it's 35mm/mf stuff

when you say 'vintage' what sort of period do you have in mind, 'brass lenses' per se are only rarely found in shutters - your best bet is to play around with brass lenses in a barrel mount, these are cheaper, if you're after 'a vintage effect'

however, if you would like to firm up further on exactly what you have in mind, then I'll have a look see and reply

btw is there any difference between 120 and 121mm on 5 x 7?

or alternatively.......................

if the use of a shutter "is a deal breaker"....................

why not take one of your existing shutters and attach a brass lens to it, works just fine, mebbe not the purist way of doing things but just as good - shutter can go either at the lens hood end or attached to the rear thread

just another thought, my few cents worth etc etc

You could consider buying a Copal 3 shutter and using step up rings to front mount the shutter on any number of your lenses.
I've used this method until I bought my Sinar with a Sinar/Copal shutter.
LUC and Packard shutters are also worth considering. British Thornton Pickard shutters are also plentiful but my preferences are for a front mounted Copal 3 or a Sinar/Copal shutter.

if the Sinar Shutter is used, then because of the size of the Canham boards and the general configuration around the front standard (of that Camera), this type of shutter could only be front mounted to a lens

Hi Andrew,
I was lucky, my Sinar/Copal shutter came with a Sinar Norma. Oh God, I promised that I wouldn't mention that I had a Sinar again!!!
The Copal 3 has a better range of speeds as I discovered today trying to use an estimated F3 lens with 100iso film in bright sunlight on the Norma. I had a fairly dense red filter but I'd left the ND's at home. Oh well, always another day.

Me again. I must say this idea of a copal 3 mounted to the front of old lenses sounds cool. I'm thinking about some lovely swirly bokeh!

The next challenge would be finding someone to drill the boards...! I guess this is straightforward.

you can cobble anything together with a lens board, black duck tape is one of your best bet's

'your bog standard' f8 Rapid Rectilinear, does not and will not swirl

a Petzval from, say, Dallmeyer, probably will not

.............but a cheaper Petzval, no doubt off of a Magic Lantern, almost certainly will swirl
