Looking for a shutter repairer
Hi All,
Heres the story...
I bought a SA 8/90 on ebay, along with a rare-as-hens-teeth cone board for an MPP. I knew when I bought it that the shutter was faulty; the glass is beautiful though, and the price was very good.
The shutter looks fine but has 2 blades displaced and is locked up. A quick peek under the cover indicates that the mechanisim, other than this, is in pristine condition. I now need to get the shutter fixed or to replace it. A few questions you may be able to help me with...
Does anyone know of a good, reliable shutter repair service in the UK? Until recently there used to be a specialist near Montpellier in Bristol, but I can't find his address.
Can the Compur #00 be replaced with a Compur #0, or with a Copal; if so how is the element spacing maintained as these are thicker than the #00?.
Who could do the replacement and relacibrate the aperture?
If all else fails, has anyone got a working #00 they would be prepared to sell me?
I know that I can get this done in the US, but don't really want to send the shutter all the way over the pond.
Many Thanks
Steve

Steve,
you can try teamwork (www.teamworkphoto.com) down south. They have a repair unit apparently. I spoke to them some time ago to CLA my Angulon 90 Copur. Didn't send it then, as I ran out of time for the last workshop...
I heard good things about Newton Ellis in Liverpool as well. Might be worth having a word with them. I think Jo spoke with them a while ago.
No personal experience with either of them, though...

Personally, I take my esteemed relics to http://www.camera-clinic.co.uk/ . I don't know about something as delicate as the shutter blades, but they fixed a faulty aperture disc on my 40-year Symmar for something like £40-50. Always struck me as being on the ball. I am pretty sure they can recalibrate apertures for you.
Best of luck,
Charles

Further to my previous email, I had previously been recommended http://www.optil.co.uk/ . They seem pretty clued up.

During the last year I've had 2 lenses repaired by John Quantick at Black on White, in Bristol, tel 0117 942 0434. The lenses were a 55mm Sekor and a SA 65mm F8 in a 00 shutter. I was very satisfied, charges were I think around £50. Before I used them I spoke to Clive Warren of F32.net and he recommended them for LF lens repairs.
