Professional Film Scanning on the Imacon 949

I'm a Landscape Photographer who specialises in scanning film and colour management in the UK. I use the Imacon 949/Hasselblad X5 scanner, but in a slightly different method to other companies. This yields some of the best scans in the market place.

How timely is that?! I was going to post a request for some drum scans and Imacon scans as I have some dark chromes and I am also considering starting the look for a drum scanner for myself and wanted a comparison.
I shall contact through the link.

Regardless of the fact that I actually know Ian, he has scanned a great many of my 4x5 and 6x7 transparencies over the last 6 months or so, and the results have simply blown me away.
The sharpness, shadow detail and colour accuracy are all superb.
His knowledge and understanding of colour management is incredible, and he seems to have inadvertently forgotten to mention the fact that he has scanned in excess of 1,000 transparencies for a certain Mr Colin Prior.
Enough said!

For those who may be interested, I've posted a zoomify image of a full res 5x4 scan (32"x25" at 300 dpi) on the website here: http://www.ianscovell.com/ian/SEAVIEW.html

The original was 420mb, & is now 28mb. There are some jpeg artifacts in the shadows, but I think it gives a reasonable indication of what an Imacon 949 scan looks like.

Thought I'd ask you this here instead of by email as others may find it interesting.

How are your scans for black and white negatives..from either 6x6 or 5x4.
These would be for large lambda black and white prints onto fibre paper.

Hi Marc,

This is a little retrospective, as I've done some B&W 66 scans for you now.

In answer to the question (for the forum). For B&W negs, I use an additional hand made light defuser on the Imacon. This yields higher quality results than others may have seen on this type of scanner.

I scan all negs as a colour transparency, then reverse and desaturate in photoshop finally adding a contrast tone curve.

This yields an image which looks quite linear, but yields all the information on the neg. I usually send these out leaving the photographer to tone the images to their liking. Recently I've started emailing out proofs of B&W/Colour negs as this gives the client a chance to look at them and for me to make an additional tonal adjustments should they require.

I've received my first few scans from Ian...very nice with every bit of details of my tri-x captured perfectly...like a visual reference for the zone system!

I don't know Ian but I had some 617 transparencies scanned by him about 1 year ago and the results are excellent.

Update:

I've just changed host providers, and now uploaded a high resolution 617 scan in zoomify.

This is a 305mb file which makes a 42" wide print at 300dpi no sharpening of any kind has been applied to the scan.

I used Ian to scan few slides for me - sorry Ian few weeks late for the thanks.

What impressed about Ian's service it is not only the high quality scans, which only requires sharpening, but the whole workflow service from receipt of slides, to proofing and after sales communication, also Ian is very happy to part of tips and learnt experience.

Even though I have an Epson V750, for those quality scans, I have no hesitation in recommending or Ian's service again.
