Hello LF'ers,

I am based just outside Norwich, Norfolk
I shoot 5x4 Black and White using a Cambo SC monorail. I use this in the field and at home by fitting it into a rucksack.
I have just started dabbling in the Alternative process and now want to shoot LF more and more.
I also notice a fair few of the same names from other forums. Some I have met, others I have corresponded with.

Phil, I've managed to get it into a pretty good working order. Replaced the fan etc., aligned it all. The last thing to do is reline polystyrene in the mixing boxes as they're very discoloured. I was reading on a Kodak sheet that the yellow reflection from a discoloured box (ooh err missus) could actually lower the contrast on VC papers.
The only hassle I do have is trying to get a non DeVere timer working. Richard (from RH Designs) gave me a wiring layout for a Hauck but no joy. I'm just waiting for a DeVere timer to arrive from Ebay but after looking around I'm just going to save my pennies and buy a stopclock pro.

the discolouration stems from the fact that they used polymers in the early days of mixboxes..... It was indestructable, wasn't it?
These days, I would recommend Barium Sulfate as a coating for mixboxes, etc. Flat visible response and as a ceramic fairly stable under shortwave and visible illumination.
There are a few other alternatives. Edmunds Scientific carries a re-coating compound for integrating spheres, etc. which might be a suitable material. Or you could buy some pure alumina plates, which as offcuts could be quite cheap, if somewhat difficult to process....
I would avoid polystyrene, as it can discolour quite quickly under shortwavelength light, depending on the additives in it.

Yellow discolouration will definitely shift the contrast on VC paper to the lower end...

Marc, the mixing boxes are currently lined with 7mm polystyrene. Is there something I can put on top of the styrene or should I replace completely? I need to keep the 7mm thickness, or thereabouts. I asked the question on another forum about the predominant use of polystyrene in mixing boxes and the reason seems to be that it's cheap and easily replaceable.
