Hi From Canuck Land

Post by Andrew O'Neill » Sat Aug 06, 2011 3:53 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Been an active member on the largeformat forum since 2003. Thought I'd join this forum since half of my family is either from there (Scotland) or is living there. There is a very small handful of us LFers around my area. Quite often I feel very alone. My formal training was in visual art, drawing and printmaking. I always thought photographers were a bunch hacks with not an ounce of creativity. But I always wanted to give it a try in the back of my head so I picked up an old Pentax K1000 and found myself in Japan. I spent 12 years there (Kyushu). The first year with the K1000, the next 2 with a Mamiya RB67, then a 4x5 (old beat up Cambo, which I still have in mothballs) for 4 years, and I've been 8x10 ever since. I never once met a LF photographer while living there. Had a crappy, plastic garbage bag darkroom set up in the corner of my kitchen in those days, then "took over" the spare bedroom which had AC. If you don't have AC in Japan, you're summers could be very miserable. Anyways, I was wrong. Photographers are not hacks! You actually can be very creative through this medium! It's not just pushing a button afterall!
Been back in Canada for 9 years. I'm originally from Saskatchewan (come on, say it with me: sas-katch-e (as in elephant)-won). I live in Coquitlam, BC, quite near Vancouver. I built small but proper darkroom in my house. I have a 4x5 and 8x10 enlarger in there. The 8x10 I built using an old graphic arts copy camera. I print silver and alt processes, such as kallitype, and carbon transfer printing. I've been quite hooked on carbon printing for the past two years.
I teach graphic design, art, and Japanese at a local high school.
