Hello from Bristol.

Post by Paul Dunning » Sat Oct 22, 2011 4:26 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Hello everyone,

I was pointed this way from the RPS forum by Paul Mitchell, it took a while to get around to it but now I'm here, thanks Paul.

My main interest is landscapes which up until quite recently I was doing solely with digital but a few months ago, feeling like I needed a new challenge, I decided to add to the toolbox and dive into the lovely world of 4x5. It's been a fun ride so far and I'm looking forward to picking the brains of all the knowledgeable people on here :)

Paul.

Hi Paul

Welcome to the forum.

It's good to see someone else from Bristol. Perhaps there may be enough interest to organise a Westcountry meet...

If you are thinking of darkroom work, then the St Pauls community centre darkroom has 3 LF enlargers. The devere 507 is set up to go. Chris Waller (who runs the darkroom courses) does some 5x4 work himself.

Ian, can you please see if Chris can join us and let people know what is available? And, of course, we'd simply like to have the company of yet another LFer :D

Hi Ian,

I’ve not really thought about darkrooms as I guess I’m more of a scan and print type person but you never know in the future. I’d definitely be interested in a Westcountry meet at some point.

Paul.

Welcome Paul

It would be good to hear what model of camera you have and details of the lenses, too?

Hi Andrew, thanks for the welcome.

The camera is an Ebony 45SU, I know, but I just couldn't resist it when I saw a used one up for sale :D

Lenses are a Schneider APO-Symmar 210mm 5.6 and a Nikkor SW 90mm 4.5, I'm thinking of getting something wider soon but haven't decided how wide yet, and maybe something to sit between the 210 and the 90.

Paul....heavens, yet another Ebony user on here...............great Cameras, terribly solid and they should hold their value well in the used market

personally, I do not 'see very wide' at all whereas plenty do, it's probably because I'm not overly interested in either landscape or architectural stuff

that's a 'fair gap' between 90 and 210mm, 150mm as I'm sure you know is 'the standard focal length' for a 4x5. A 210mm lens is nice for 4x5

best regards

andrew

A wise choice. The asymmetric tilt makes focussing a breeze!

Any wider than 90mm and you'll run into problems with (lack of) bellows flexibility so make sure you budget for bag bellows if you want to use a lot of movements.

Welcome to the forum Paul, I did say you would receive a warm welcome!

As an aside I've been exploring parts of the Ridgeway recently and am willing to organise a day out somewhere near Swindon if anyone's interested?

Sadly , I'm actually in Swindon- well, someone has to live here!

Seriously though, I'd be interested in a local meet.

Cheers,
Carol

Hi Carol,

I'm sure you'll be very welcome :) There is a thread over in the workshops section discussing this, viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2979
