Irish View

Post by Colm Connaughton » Wed Nov 30, 2011 12:08 am Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Hello Folks,
New to the group. While a pro photographer for a good few years I am just getting into large format. Interested in analog at present for personal work on large format. Have a nice Sinar P2 (5x4) kit with 6 lenses and panels etc. and an old Linhof Technika Press (1956) which is nice and light for landscape work complete with original 150mm lens. I also have a Kodak Specialist W/Plate with a 5x4 back also and a 240mm lens - going to sell soon.

Have gone through the colour & B&W darkroom stage into digital for my day to day work. Like the idea of shooting landscape in B&W, all though haven't ruled out tranny as I have a freezer with a bit of it. Love the control both needed and achieved with large format. At present developing in a JOBO, but might go back to filling my Kodak deep tanks. Love to try some 10x8, but film & cameras very expensive. Also hard to get a good supply of 10x8 film.

That's just about all for my intro. Hoping to learn and develop (pardon the pun) my large format skill & knowledge.

Cheers,
Colm Connaughton

Welcome to the forum Colm, it gladdens my heart when I hear pro's still preferring film for personal work. I once visited Cavan... spent the whole day in a plastics manufacturing factory!

Thanks Paul,
Don't get enough time to do as much as I would like - planning to change that in the coming year. Live not far from the plastic plant. Not the tourist hotspot most think of in Ireland, but parts of Cavan have their own rugged beauty. Cavan does have 365 lakes in the county and a fishing favourite, so I'm told by those in the "know".

Cheers,
Colm

Welcome too Colm. "Nice and light"? May I ask just how heavy is your Linhof press camera? Our colleague Charles has been known to leap up mountains bearing a metal camera but some of us have no such youthful vigour left, and use wooden cameras, of a sort that was once highly favoured…

It would be nice to have a communal LF trip to Ireland sometime.

Thanks George,
Must weigh it. I'm not over fit myself, but improving slowly. It's not that heavy compared to the SinarP2 or Kodak Specialist. It folds away nicely allowing for easy insertion in a normal sized camera bag. Tripod is heavier (Manfrotto 056). Have several lighter ones, but they don't like wind.

When I get more proficient with LF it would be nice to have an organised trip in Ireland I know of 3 guys into LF (film) near me as it is.
Cheers,
Colm

Hi Colm, and welcome too, am only newish in this Group myself. You seem well equipped, well done, I would say don't worry about 10x8, 4x5 is more than adeqaute, and you have a wider selection of Film. Do you buy in Dublin? Can give you suppliers of Kodak & Fuji.
Wonder have you relations in New Ross, Wexford?]Anyway, congratulations, Tom,

Thanks Tom,
I buy where ever I can get film. Dublin is best for acciage costs. Since my first post I have sale agreed in Ireland for my specialist. Will try 10x8 some day - cameras coming down all the time. All I need is a !0x8 rear standard, back & bellows and I'm flying. Do have relations (distant) in New Ross.

Cheers,
Colm
