Another hello

Hi, thought I might as well introduce myself, I'm 15, and based in Linton, Cambridgeshire. I've been shooting digital landscapes for about a year and have now switched to 5x4, after attending a talk at focus by David Ward, which convinced me it was the way to go.

Heres the first remotely successful image I've been able to capture so far on film, taken near Southwold on the suffolk coast. Hope you like it.

If you're anything like me, that wonderful piece of technology that is your digital camera will sit around gathering dust, because you have so much fun with the BIG viewfinder.

That's a lovely shot you've posted, well seen, nice light too, if you're just beginning and turning out shots like these, we'll expect big things from you

Hi Tom and welcome to the "club". You certainly must be the youngest here but then most of us tend to be boring old fogeys

I hope that you will join us on one of our outings some day; there are a few people locally who may be organising a day out on a weekend but we will be holding the next bi-annual workshop in the Essex/Suffolk area in October anyway, so that will give you a chance to meet around 20 or so folks, if the last one was anything to go by.

You seem to have a really good eye for a picture and, if your first attempt at 4x5 is anything to go by, we shall look forwards to your future efforts

And, yes, I too have a Nikon D200 which has been gathering more dust than pictures when compared to the 4x5 over the last few months.

Hi Tom,

well, I for one am impressed with what I see on your site... You clearly have an eye for composition (certainly a better one than I have).

One criticism I would apply (and it is a minor one), is that I do not really care for B&W with part colour in them. But then, you might say that is due to the fact that I personally do prefer raw B&W anyway (and have for a long time...)

It'll be interesting to see what you are going to do with a view camera, as it dends to slightly change people's styles. I think we are in for a treat.

I am afraid Marc has a documented tendency to want to photograph square compositions with a 5x4 camera. So one should not be surprised that he struggles.

And yes Tom, that pic is a cracker - take good care of it. Nice to see a pic that is not over-filtered. What film and lens did you use?
Your website also has some good'uns. Did you get your LRPS? How are you finding the slower pace of LF?

Marc, thanks for the comments, regarding the shots which mix colour and B&W, its not something I do anymore really, it was fun the first couple of times and got quite boring, however I've had some good feedback about the beach huts shot.

Charles, thanks for the interest, yes I got my LRPS last November. To me, the slower pace seems to make much more sense, the way you put the time into the best images, rather than waisting it taking hundreds of images you'll never print. I much prefer spending more time behind the camera than the computer too!

This shot was taken with an ebony RSW45, and Schneider 90mm f/5.6 (older than XL), on velvia 100 quickload (I'm now trying some provia too, which I have heard is better if you are going to scan). I think I used a .6 hard grad on this one. Scanned with a v700.

Be carefull, Chucky! People occasionally fall off mountainsides, swimming pool edges, sea walls, etc...

Especially if someone pushes.
