UK supplier of anti-newton ring glass
Anybody sourced any in the UK? I know there's Doug at Better Scanning in the US, but it seems a bit silly to be shipping glass 4,000 miles and paying the PO for the privilege of pushing paper on your behalf.

Re: UK supplier of anti-newton ring glass
Hi Patrick,
There was a thread about this in Dec last year, it can be viewed here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1410&start=0 although there appears to be no resolve.
There's a company called Knight Optical who do it - http://www.knightoptical.co.uk/acatalog ... nGlass.htm
My local glazing company on the Island make a 'lightly frosted' glass. I bought some cut to size for about £5 when I had a 4990 a few years ago. It worked pretty well, I found that it added a very, very slight texture to pale/light (ie sky) areas where the texture of the glass could be seen through the tranny.
Best
Ian
I'm sure there'll be a zillion other posts with other solutions also

I see they do various standard sizes. What size would fit the BetterScanning sheet film holder? I could make enquiries as to the cost each and of ordering say 10 of them for the group?

Re: UK supplier of anti-newton ring glass
I'd be interested - I want to use it with a 4990, taping the film to the underside and using stick-on spacers to raise the film above the scanner glass. I was thinking A4, Letter or 10x8-ish, but size isn't that critical.

A sheet of AN glass 240 x 170mm will fit the Betterscanning mounting station.
Re: UK supplier of anti-newton ring glass
Regarding AN glass - I thought I'd be a Yorkshire cheapskate
and see what alternatives I could source. I was buying some mountboard from my local Hobbycraft store and noticed they had non-reflective glass/backboards in their picture framing bit. So I made up some height adjuster test shims made out of post-its (good for height experimentation) with some curly 120 roll film taped to the bottom of the non-reflective glass (emulsion side down/film base on non reflective side of glass) a la betterlight holder. There is enough fine texture to stop Newtons rings and I didnt notice any obvious hot/cold spots in the resulting scan. I replaced the post-its with some sticky-back craft foam (same thickness!!) from the same craft store. Total price for a 5*7 sheet less than a tenner. For the odd few times I've used it it seems fine tho YMMV.
regards Tim...
PS I know my local (now defunct) picture framer had some much more expensive etched non-reflective glass which would do the same trick - worth investigating maybe !!

Thanks Tim, I will give the non-reflective glass ago before 'digging deep'.
