French MF/LF galerie-photo conf., Perpignan Oct 15-17, 2010

Post by Emmanuel Bigler » Mon Apr 26, 2010 3:05 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Hello all !
The French medium and large format community federated by the web sites http://www.galerie-photo.info and http://www.galerie-photo.com is pleased to announce its 5-th conference

Location : Perpignan, France
Dates : October 15, 16 and 17, 2010 (from Friday afternoon to Sunday)

The detailed programme is still in progress, but the actual location to accommodate the conference is already reserved, downtown Perpignan, close to the Spanish border on the Mediterranean sea, East Pyrenees.
Perpignan is the city where the International festival of photo-journalism "Visa pour l'Image" takes place annually
http://www.visapourlimage.com

The main subjet of the 2010 galerie-photo conference this year will be :
Self-Published Photographic Books ("Le livre de photographe")

More details to appear here (in French, sorry)
http://www.galerie-photo.info/forumgp/read.php?5,4184

The conference is organised by a group of local volunteers in the Perpignan area leaded by Pierre Corratgé.

Besides this main topic, there will be as usual several informal workshops, small group meetings around equipment and techniques.
Among things, a small tri-colour, trichromatic group of eccentrics, (call them as you wish) is planning to demonstrate a tri-colour analogue slide show, in the great tradition of Sergei Prokudin Gorskii !
Preparation for this project is discussed here
http://www.galerie-photo.info/forumgp/read.php?5,18179
This will be MF slides, so off-topic here... ;)

Emmanuel

I will do my best to be there and start organising ferry, hotel etc. later this year.
I have a self published book entitled "Beyond the Obvious" on the blurb website and will bring a copy (or two).

Hope you and your family are well.

Best wishes

John, it is great if you can attend the Perpignan conference and share with the participants your experience of a self published photo book.

The programme is being worked out those days and Pierre Corratgé, the leader of the organising team is preparing a memourable event.

Regarding jokes & other entertainments during the conference, I'm planning with Henri Gaud to demonstrate duotone analogue projections with two 6x6 slide projectors operated side by side.
The original goal was to perform a tri-color analogue projection like Prokudin Gorskii, but the duotone system is probably easier ; the lignment of 3 separate projectors is probably a very difficult challenge, whereas the 2-projector situation seems more realistic.
We'll see.

Emmanuel

I think it mught be more fun seeing you try to align 3 projectors!!

I checked with my sat.nav. and Perpignon is over a 1200 mile journey going via Dover so I must leave several days in advance of the start date and take a leisurley run down.

All the best

Hope to meet you in Perpignan in October !!

Notes regarding travel:

Perpignan is the "Chef-Lieu" of "Département des Pyrénées Orientales". The city is located on the Mediterranean coast, East Pyrenees, close the the French-Spanish border. It is quite far from the British Isles for sure, but some airlines (including low-cost airlines) do operate flights to Perpignan and nearby Carcassone regional airports.

Perpignan is located 200 km by motorway from Barcelona, Spain, a major Spanish airport; 160 km from Montpellier or 200km from Toulouse, France, two major French regional airports.

Perpignan is directly connected to the French high-speed train network (TGV). Travel time by TGV from Paris to Perpignan is between 5h and 5h30.
By car, Perpignan can be reached from the Toulouse or Lyons areas by motorway.
Shortest travel time by car/motorway from Paris, depending on the route chosen, is about 850 km, 8 hours excluding stops.
Cost comparison between plane, train and car is far from obvious, take into account that French motorways are toll-motorways and that fuel, unfortunately, is not like the admission to the conference ;-)
The viammichelin (among others) route planning web site can help you a lot if you intend to come by car.

Are you still planning to make that journey in October? I did the same journey in reverse across France last year and took three leisurely days, so how about this for an easy-going itinerary?:

Day 1: Calais to Blois. As you drive through Eure et Loire, an hour before Blois, look for the twin steeples of Chartres cathedral looming over the flat landscape. Stay at Hôtel de France et de Guise, 3 Rue Gallois, 41000 Blois. On-street parking outside, and a big car park opposite. Very French, and good value, bang in the centre by the chateau.

Day 2: Blois to St Flour. Stay at Grand Hotel de l'Europe, 12-13 Cours Spy des Ternes, 15100 Saint-Flour. Faces the town square, with parking right outside. St Flour sits high on top of one of the Auvergne's huge volcanic plugs, and there are magnificent views from the windows of the rooms at the back of the hotel. Equally French, equally good value. If you take a laptop with you, ask at reception for "le wifi gratuit".

Day 3: St Flour to Perpignan. Take the fantastic, almost empty A75/E11 south to Beziers. It crosses the high ground of the Auvergne - look out for the Pont de Garabit on your right (built by Gustave Eiffel), and then cross the Pont de Millau. Stop off at lunchtime to buy Languedoc wine (a St Chinian red would do nicely), and arrive Perpignan mid-afternoon.

Say hello to M. Corratgé from me, and ask him to tell you all about le flou.

I still intend to go but may cross from Poole to Cherbourg as per the last time we visited France.
Its a much longer crossing (4,5 hours) and my wife was not to keen on it so suggested Dover.
However Dover is several hours drive from Salisbury so I may prevail and use Poole.

However thanks for the route, I may pick up some of it.
Want to visit the Millau bridge as recently saw TV prog. on its construction-awesome.

Thanks again

I share your wife's reservations about the long sea crossing. Instead of driving the half a dozen miles to the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry, I'd rather drive across country to Folkestone and go through the tunnel - thus adding perhaps a hundred miles to an otherwise comfortable day's drive.

However, Cherbourg-Blois is even shorter than Calais-Blois (Cherbourg - Caen - Le Mans - Blois), so you could easily pick up my route at the end of the first day.

Millau is awesome, there's no doubt. Garabit, on the other hand, is a much smaller bridge, a railway viaduct. But when the sunlight catches its red lead paintwork it glows like it's on fire. And if ever a bridge could be beautiful, this one is.

Well, sorry to wax lyrical about bridges ...

If it is any help to anyone Ryanair fly to Perpingnan from Stansted. Costs vary but I just checked and it is still possible to book a return for those dates for about £55 including taxes. The airport is only a couple of miles out of town.
