Large format equipment on ebay

Post by Bip » Sun Mar 15, 2009 11:50 am Etc/GMT-1+01:00

There is a LOT of large format equipment being sold on ebay. Who is buying this gear and what kind of photographs are they taking? Is it mainly amateur photographers?

I've bought some stuff on ebay, but most secondhand anyway. I got my Linhof Kardan Color 45s off ebay a couple of weeks ago. For lenses I prefer to buy from a UK based dealer in case there are shutter problems, etc.

I've re-equipped using Ebay over the past 5 or 6 years.

Now I have two systems one in the UK the other here in Turkey/Greece. That's 5x4 and 10x8 systems, as well as 2 or 3 Speed/Crown Graphics for hand held work.

I've also upgraded my enlarger to a De Vere 5108 so now I can print all the formats I shoot from 6x6, 6x9, 6x17 9x12 plus 5x4 & 10x8.

Ten years ago that would have been a huge outlay, now it's quite modest as prices are so low.

All my equipment gets used, maybe not as much as I'd like but nothing sits idle, except the 35mm gear :D

I have bought most of my LF gear from Ebay. Without that platform (and without the decrease of prices for LF gear), I probably would never have been able to get into LF.

Does anyone know who the zero-rated seller uk topstock is? They are selling new Shen Hao, Sinar & Fotoman cameras and are supposed to be in Middlesex? Not sure any of these would be classed as a bargain, mind!

Peter, don't quote me but it might be http://foto-arte.co.uk/ as I know they're based in Harrow and retail Shen Hao & Fotoman

You might well be right Paul, but the starting price on both the Shen Haos appears to be their full retail price. I could maybe understand it if it was a Buy It Now price, but seems a strange way to do business. :?

I was bidding for a Nikkor M series 200mm lens, mounted in a Copal 0 shutter, last night. I withdrew when the price exceeded my £350 limit. The lens sold for an astonishing £620!!!

It's the £/$

I paid over £800 for my 300mm f9 Nikkor M around 20 years ago, I'd guess the £ was at it's closest to parity with the $ at the time, and Robert White had to order the lens from Japan. I've used it twice !!! but it does fit my 10x8 camera's but I really like my12" Dagor :D

No the Pounds sinking again the value rises as there weren't that many of these lenses imported.

You're quite correct Edwin, it isn't listed. Strangely enough though, checking out the completed listings brought the information that it had not only finished earlier today without a bid, but it has now apparently been relisted here.
