Velvia 50 to return?

Post by Tim Myers » Tue Oct 24, 2006 11:15 am Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Just read this thread over on APUG; aparently RVPII is set for launch in Japan in the spring of 2007.

OK, so what are all you V50 fanatics going to do with all that old stock in freezers when you find out the new stuff is as good or better ?

The freezer stock is getting quite low now after a week in Scotland :(. Didn't manage a box a day though.

Hopefully this will mean that I can return the Velvia section of the freezer to normal operational use and gain brownie points...

But what for Velvia though - I don't think that Fuji would be able to sustain 3 varieties of RVP, I can see 100F being given its marchine orders fairly quickly if this RVPII emulsion is ever released.

Oh please.... :D

I have 150 sheets in the freezer, 10 sheets on standby in the fridge and another 10 loaded into darkslides... :? Should last me a while, I don't get out much ( read into that what you will... )

You have to wonder what it would be like. If Velvia 100 is faster, allegedly (ever so slightly) finer grained, and doesn't suffer the reciprocity of Velvia50, will Vii50 keep some of these traits, or be exactly like the old one? A V50 with no reciprocity under 4 minutes.... now that would be nice... I personally have never used the V100, but I understand it's somewhat lack-lustre reception was down to slightly less saturation than the 50.

Given V100 was modelled to replace V50, I'd imagine if they were going to ditch one of the others, wouldn't they ditch V100? Doesn't V100F have it's own properties, a more natural saturation? Seems odd to ditch the V100F and keep the two targetted at the same market.

All the same, it's good that they are listening, although you have to wonder what the pricing will be....

The cynic in me says they never had any problems sourcing the raw materials for Velvia50 at all, they just found something almost as good but much cheaper to produce/source, so end-of-lifed V50 and released V100 at a higher price. One has to wonder if the new Vii50 is actually new, or exactly the same as the old V50. If it's identical, you could see how this might be a "remarketing" ploy ( like the old Coke Classic thing ) to bump up prices/sales of a declining market. Me? Cynical? Never!
