Which Sheet film for colour negatives ?

Post by Dave Tolcher » Wed Aug 18, 2010 9:32 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Wondered what the consensus ( ) on which neg film to use ? I have just finished my last Pro 160S quickload stock and need to buy some sheet film instead. Ektar looks good but is the range the same as PRO 160s or is it closer to Provia ?

Thanks

hi Dave

a coincidental post as I've just finished speed reading thro' a review of the new Ektar 100 when compared with Kodak 160VC and Fuji Pro160C, which was in VC Mag March/April this year, bit of a yawn for the B&W merchants

would you like a copy?

if so, I can either scan and email a copy over to you or post you a copy - I've your details. as you know

let me know, happy to help out here - best to send me a pm

best

I'd be very interested as well.. any chance of sending it to my dotted name at gmail dot com

p.s. From my own personal research, I quite like the Portra's - they seem to colour balance better when scanned and are definitely sharper

I've mostly been using Portra the last few months, as Tim says seems easier to balance on the scan and looks sharper.
Personally prefer the NC version, find it a little colder, which I like, than the VC, but happy to use either.

If you dont mind sending me that review as well Andrew to craig @ my-username dot co dot uk would be appreciated.
I've got some stuff upstairs on Ektar i need to scan but haven't had time.

My first batch of film is back from Digital Lab (who were fantastic and developed them and printing the negs for me at a much reduced rate in return for my opinion on the results - very good results indeed) and I can give my first few opinions..

Firstly - 160VC is awesome, silky smooth with amazing dynamic range and scans really nicely. ... secondly 400NC is awesome, very little grain visible at 2000dpi scan and wonderful colour and dynamic range

I'm writing it all up for the second issue of the new magazine I'm starting next month.. (subscription based but with some free articles. More info in the next few days)
