Thank goodness, there isn't a trace of Yorkshire blood in me (a lot of other stuff not necessarily much better though), but I know what you mean. Yes, only so interesting. I thought the darkroom stuff might get some notice.
To be honest, I have all the gear I can justify right now. Sure, expensive tripod heads and Schneider XL lenses would be nice, but simply put, I don't expect them to improve my technique/ability to get the picture. IMO a lot of people spend more money than is warranted on this LF lark. (For the sake of this forum, please PM the insults).

There might not be any actual blood but certain traits show through!Charles Twist wrote:Thank goodness, there isn't a trace of Yorkshire blood in me (a lot of other stuff not necessarily much better though)

Photography participants can be victims of silver bullet chasing - after a while once you've got the basics, it comes dowwn to the skill and dedication of the person pressing the button. Certain items may improve pictures - polarisers, grads etc but you've still got to be there at the correct time and place and have it set up correctly to get the results.
One of my other hobbies is golf - from a cynical (AKA tight-fisted) point of view it's a marketing man's dream that you've got to have the latest set of clubs to be able to hit the ball better or that this training aid will knock tens of your score. The Tiger Woods of the world may be playing with the last couple of percent of their game to get that extra few inches, hit any shot etc but for some of us, it'd be nice to have a mastery of the first 50% of the game... A bit of guidance in the form of a few lessons has made a world of difference even with some relatively ordinary clubs and there's no point buying more / better until I can use these to a suitable standard.
At least with golf, you're limited to 14 clubs per round; not like photography where you end up needing a small team of sherpas to lug everything round "just-in-case" you need it.
Unfortunately, with a lot of things, it's a case of "not what it's worth, what they can get you to pay for it" which tends to be on the relatively expensive end for "professional" level equipment - who in their right mind would pay 50 quid for a piece of 100mm square coloured "plastic" (and that's only 1 out of 6 or 8 if you're doing the B&W set properly.)
Is that enough of a rant for you Charles?
