Lens Boards - Hole position

Post by Brian E » Thu Sep 27, 2007 11:33 am Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Hi All

Probably a silly question but have just received some new Linhoff style lens boards with the hole (Copal 0 & 1) drilled off centre - (I use a Gandolfi Variant and Cambo Legend) - Has anyone experienced any cut off because the hole is not centered (especially when using movements) ??

off-centre hole on Linhof Technika 96x99 boards

To the best of my knowlegde, the original Linhof Technika boards are drilled off-centre for some good mechanical reason proper to the Technika itself.

I know the Arca Swiss adapting board, that allows to mount 96x99 Technika boards to 171mm or 141mm Arca Swiss boards.
The adapting board is designed so that the hole is re-centered for use on the Arca Swiss monorail cameras.
Otherwise, I know that several camera brands use the Technika 96x99 board, e.g. Wista, I have never heard anybody complain anout the off-centre hole.

Hole in one's Lihof style board

Post by Richard » Thu Oct 11, 2007 6:22 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

I had the same 'problem' with the position of the lens hole in Linhof style mount boards. I use Ebony cameras which - according to Ebony - 'use 96mm x 99mm Linhof Technika lens boards'. I bought 2 new lenses from Robert White ( 2 seperate purchases); although both were mounted on 96mm x 99mm boards, one board had the hole cut centrally and the other cut 10mm below the centre line. The BELOW center-line board appears to be correctly aligned on the Ebony.
I'm not sure how much of a problem this 10mm difference might be in the field. But, I have simply pencil-marked the front standard to show me where to set the front standard when I use the lenses mounted on the boards with the centrally drilled lens hole.
I did have a different problem with my first lens and lens board. The lens board could move laterally 1.5 - 2mm even when fixed. Not a problem with a single exposure, but a minor disaster with making a multiple exposure; resetting the shutter moved the board. As a new LF user, I assumed that the mount board recess had been machined slightly on the big side. It wasn't until I bought my second lens - which had absolutely no lateral movement - that I discovered the diameter of the raised light seal ring on the back of the board was too small! So, if you have the same problem, check the light seal.
