As for lens choices.. 90 and 150 are a couple of great angles and the ones the op has chosen will produce excellent pictures.

I acted upon Joanna's advice and bought a BTZS Focus Hood from the States at £27.43, USPS cost £25.21! To make sure I benefited from the extortionate shipping rates I added a DOF & Scheimphlug calculator and a lens wrench.

I've also cancelled my order with Foto-Arte for the SH Nikkor lenses... after doing more research I felt that the SW 90/4.5 was going to be far to heavy for the camera, it only weighs 1380g. I think I'm going to wait and buy new from RW.

Tim - great blog you have combined with some superb images.

Lens choice

Post by dennis » Sun Jan 13, 2008 12:01 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

My Grandagon 6.8 90mm came from RW & Matt did not suggest a centre filter & have not really found light fall off a problem. 'cause I may not be very discerning . . . I do like the Grandagon 4.5 55mm which just covers 4 x 5 & even allows a little rising front with a bit of juggling. That said I use it mostly with a 6 x 12 back for which it is excellent. Good snapping.

Light fall off is not a problem using 5x4 with the f6.8 90mm Grandagon, I've been using mine for 20 years with absolutely no problem.

However my 65mm SA does have fall off on 5x4, but as I only use it very occasionally for B&W work it's easy to correct at the printing stage. If I could find a reasonable priced centre filter I might buy one for the65mm as it would also fit my 75mm SA on my 6x17.

Paul, beware, the 6.8-90 Grandagon lobbyists are back ;) and might re-start putting the pressure upon you ; its weigth is only 460 grams on Copal (one British pound if you prefer)

Only the good ol' Vintage-Angulons-Not-Super can compete in terms of weight ; unfortunately they can't compete in terms of optical performance...

Newbie question about lens choice

I did these things by accident but they are worth considering. I bought a 240 G-Claron for my 4x5 and now I'm up to 5x7 & 8x10 I'm over the moon to find that it also covers these formats. My 90 S.A. will cover 5x7 as will my 150 G-Claron and my 203 Ektar. My advice is to check what the lenses that you buy for 4x5 will cover.......just in case. If you think that moving up will be expensive I bought my 4x5/5x7 Burke & James from a bloke in the states for £125-00 plus p&p, its a joy to use and if you don't think that grey paint goes with red bellows your wrong, it's beautiful.
