Chris Killip's Pirelli Work

Post by Matt_Bigwood » Sat Jan 19, 2008 5:10 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

I recently got a copy of Pirelli Work and find it a fascinating book - even more so as it was shot on hand-held 5x4.

Has anyone else seen it? A couple of the pictures are featured in the Phaidon 55 book on Killip.

At the back of my mind I really have to question his approach to the subject, using a large format camera and flash.

Does the highly-directional flash alter the subject - it certainly changes the quality of light from how it was originally in the factory (Killip says in the book that he tried to shoot with availbale light but it wasn't possible)

Is the use of 5x4 a 'hair shirt'? Would it have been easier to shoot on 35mm?
