Coverage figures

Post by IanG » Fri May 02, 2008 3:48 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

As we keep mentioning coverage.

10x8 need an image circle of 326mm

300mm f9 M Nikon 325mm

240mm f5.6 Symmar 336mm

240m f5.6 Apo Symmar 352mm

Schnieder's own data sheet shows the 240mm G Claron as not covering 10x8
see: http://www.sepiatoner.com/pdf/Schneider ... _Sheet.pdf

The Nikon & Symmar cover significantly more at f22 and f32, the G-Claron should just begin to cover by f32 - f45, Schneider state an image circle of 298mm @ f22

I use a 240mm Sironar-N on 8x10, Copal 3 and very big, but lots of coverage. it was about £120 on the bay. I also have the Symmar-S from a lot I bought, but I didn't use it in the end.

On 300mm I also prefer the Sironar, it's just slightly smaller than the Symmar-S of the same age, and apparently has a tad more coverage.

The thing is, these lens are /enormous/. Copal 3 shutters means I carry /one/ lens when I take the 8x10 out, otherwise it's just too big..

G-Claron

Post by keeds » Mon May 05, 2008 6:45 pm Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Yes the G-Clarons are not designed for normal photography and Schneider's coverage figure are extremely underrated. The G-Clarons are favourites of ULF users as the usable coverage increases as you stop down. I have used my 240 with lots of front swing @ f22 on 8x10 with little trouble.

OK, so the golden question... where to buy 10x8 colour print film? Silverprint are wanting 61 quid inc VAT for 10 sheets of 160S, anyone know anywhere cheaper?

Am I better off buying 'bulk' from the US?

I now have a 10x8 converted P2, 4X DDS's, a 300/5.6 beta symmar (in prontor pro like my 5x4 lenses), and am just waiting on a copal #3 lens board.

I can't wait to get shooting... surely someone has a recommendation for picking up colour print film?

8x10 colour film

Post by keeds » Tue May 20, 2008 11:27 am Etc/GMT-1+01:00

Well www.morco.uk.com want £100 for Porta 8x10. They don't list 160S in 8x10, but might be able to get it.

I have an account with B&H in the States, despite the weak $ prices are still a fraction of those in the UK.

That can be a sore point. Usually they don't charge duty on smaller packages, simply because they don't have the manpower & facilities to process everything. But it's VAT + an import duty on the goods & postage when they do. The duty varies according to certain categories, but in general they don't charge anyway on items of £100 or less.

Of the 40+ parcels I've had from the US only 2 have ever had tax added, both were very large heavy packages, 10x8 cameras. I can get goods brought over from the US as well at times, as I have family there.

Dennis, the import duty for a lens is 6.7%.

But don't forget that the tax is worked out by first applying the import duty, then working out the VAT on that combined total :!: :?:

Then, ensure that you get B&H to send the package via USPS; although this can take a little longer, Parcel Force only charge a fraction of what UPS or DHL do for collecting the tax due. I reckon on £10-20 in fees.

So, price e.g. £100

+ duty £100 x 1.067 = £106.70

+ VAT £106.70 x 1.175 = £123.37

+ collection fee e.g. £133.37

The rate of duty on other items can vary but I think this is the highest rate I have encountered so far; many times there is no duty, especially on digital camera bodies

It is also not unknown for Parcel Force to not bother to collect the tax due from time to time :P

Jo,

I think Dennis was asking about the tax level on film rather than equipment - do you have that in the C&E table?

Joanne is slightly wrong about how the taxes are added.

First the cost of the goods, then you add the cost of the postage, the duty is then added to that followed by the VAT. They aren't additive they compound each other :D

So far I haven't paid any tax on 5x4 film, I buy my 10x8 from Berlin so none is applicable anyway.

Hi Andrew, yes the rate would appear to be 6.5%

Here is a link to that part of the TARIC that seems to apply.
