My eyeline is about where the thermostat display is.

3 leg positions, twist locks for the leg extending legs, and built-in spikes/rubber ends. They also include a short centre column (which I'll probably fit as the default) and a decent carry bag.

I hope that isn't a 30 degree slope! We had subsidence in Stoke on Trent but nothing as bad as that ;-)

Looks good! I shall have to take a snap of my tripod at full extension just .. well just because I so little else to do :-)

I do hope you will take your tripod shots with several different emulsions and compare and contrast the results.

I have just been playing with some Manfrotto and Gitzo legs in the shop, and I'd say the Redsnapper legs have a better quality feel than the 055 ones (they are a lot more substantial than the 190s), but are maybe not quite as good as the Gitzos (and certainly not as light as the Gitzo cf ones).

The leg locks are very similar (if not identical) to the Gitzo ones.

So I'm happy enough for half the 055's price.

I've tried the head out briefly and it seems easy to use and locks fairly solidly. The ball moves a bit if you carry the camera/tripod over your shoulder and don't have it locked down very tightly, but in 'real' use it seems smooth and rigid enough when locked.

I wish Gitzo would produce their own lightweight version of Manfrotto's 410 head in either magnesium or soulid. Currently my 410 head weighs more than my Gitzo series 2 CF tripod!
Love is an Ebony mounted with a Cooke PS945.......

I have the same problem - the 410 weighs more than my Manfrotto Carbon One tripod! Having said that I really like using the 410 - much better than the old Benbo ball head I had.
Regs, Nigels.

Yep... me to - I'd be interested in a good lightweight 410 - as it is I use a ballhead for weight

I was all ready to buy a 410 until I realised just how big and heavy it was. The Linhoff 3-way levelling head sounds good, but it and a gitzo tripod would cost more than I'd pay for a car ...

German photographer Andreas Weidner claims that carbon tripods become extremely fragile when the temperature is very low: is that true  ?

they seem OK to -50 celsius according a cinematographer I know.. I imagine below -273 it gets a bit dangerous.

p.s. Although the block of frozen air may protect it ...

That's when you need a metallic hydrogen tripod. They're very light but they only work in high-pressure environments.... :D
